Getting involved

Research is the process of collecting information (data) and analyzing data to better understand a phenomenon. There are numerous different ways to collect and analyze data, but what is it like to actually take part in research?

Breanna’s experience of taking part in research

Breanna took part in a study at Amsterdam UMC which investigated the effect of hormone therapy on sleep. This is what Breanna had to say about the experience of taking part:

Why did you want to take part? For me, I know with the body of research on trans people, there are some aspects that have been studied a lot. This study sounded like something that hadn’t been researched yet, so I wanted to participate because we didn’t really know anything about that particular subject yet, and I was kind of curious myself about what the outcomes would be. I also think it is extremely valuable to share your experience so that researchers might conclude that there is something going on that should be looked into it more.

What was the process of taking part like? I really enjoyed it! In my case I was approached to take part near the end of an appointment at the (VUMC) clinic. The researcher and I took some extra time afterward to fill in some questionnaires and to get me set up for the study. I think it's also important to mention that, while I was approached to join during an appointment at the clinic, participating in the study had no influence on my care whatsoever.

Taking part in research is not necessarily just sitting there and being studied passively; it can also involve being an active participant. I had to think about what I experienced and how I was going to communicate that to the researchers, and there was always space for me to add any comments or insights I might have.

What should others consider before taking part in research? I think if you are going to take part in a study you should try to see ahead of time if you can participate in the whole thing. Also make sure that it doesn’t disrupt your own life too much, because you need to have the time and space for it in your life to be able to actually participate. That being said, it’s very much worth doing, so definitely try to participate if you’re able!
